When we complain to someone about their behaviour, for example , it is usual to expect that the person will produce an apology, a justification, an excuse or some combination of these expected responses. Where doing one thing with an utterance in talk sets up the expectation of a particular sort of thing being done in response, or at least where it makes the doing of the thing highly relevant, we can speak of paired utterances or adjacency pairs. The first speaker's utterance is the first pair part and the second speaker's utterance is the second pair part.
