Keep an emergency stash separate from other valuables in case you lose your travelers’ checks or credit cards. Cash is still the only form of purchase in markets, small guesthouses and shops, so you will need it for many transactions. You should be able to order some euro notes from your bank before setting out or from branches of Thomas Cook or American Express. Alternatively, there are ATMs at both arrival airports in Sicily where you can get ready cash. Most ATMs take international cards wherever the Maestro or Cirrus symbol is displayed.
Marzipan is used extensively. A well-known Sicilian dessert is frutta di martorana, an almond marzipan pastry colored and shaped to resemble real fruit. In much of Sicily events are celebrated with traditional sweets. For example cassata is typically made to celebrate Easter. Gelato (ice cream) in Sicily is also particularly good, as is granita, a sweetened crushed ice flavored with lemons or strawberries served mainly in summer from street carts and bars/ cafés. For the best gelato head to a popular gelateria (easy to pick by the crowds waiting outside), rather than a restaurant or supermarket.
