Florentine Dominicans attracted a somewhat greater proportion of their membership from elite families, while the Franciscans had greater appeal for the middle ranks of the popolo and for non-elite immigrants from the contado. Only 14% of Florentine Franciscans at Santa Croce around 1300 came from city families with surnames (some but not all from the elite), and two-thirds of them were identified by their families’ places of origin in the contado. 33 The Franciscan emphasis on poverty as a superior spiritual state, combined with the critique of wealth to which it gave rise, probably found more sympathetic adherents among the less wealthy, whereas the austere philosophical traditions of the Dominicans may have appealed somewhat more to the upper classes.
